The Rundown: Over G Fighters

Ubisoft, together with Japanese developer Taito, will in a few short weeks be bringing one of the first aerial combat titles to the Xbox 360 with Over G Fighters. But don’t fret—it’s not yet another World War II game. This time around we will be flying into the 21st century and we’ll without a doubt be breaking the sound barrier.

The Story:

In Over G Fighters, the world as we know it has drastically changed. It is in fact the 21st century—and wars appear to be all but forgotten as bloody mistakes of the past. The world has come together in unison thanks to one giant alliance known as the World Federation Preliminary Establishment Committee. Opposition to this committee is non-existent… or so it seems.

Militant groups have risen in opposition to this newly unified world and they refuse to demonstrate peacefully. The world is rapidly thrown into chaos, and wars of the past are mistakes the human race seems doomed to repeat. Only the World Federation can prevent the destruction of this newly formed utopia. They react quickly—an elite fighting squadron is created, known as the Energy Air Force. Only these few selected men and women, from different regions all across the world, carry the burden of unifying mankind.

The Rundown:

In Over G Fighters players will attempt over 40 missions of intense aerial combat while facing more than 90 different types of enemy planes. Players are able to get in the cockpits of some of the most powerful jet fighters in the Western world, including the F/A 22 Raptor, the F-15 Eagle, and the F117A Stealth Bomber. They are also able to enjoy a 360 degree view of the cockpit, including realistic detailed instrumentation. Those who are lucky enough to have 5.1 surround sound will more than likely be blown away by the gunshots of a gut-wrenching dogfight and the lit afterburner from the subsequent escape.

One of the most interesting features of Over G Fighters is the Flight Data Recorder. Players are able to save their aerial exploits and through the replay system they can learn from their mistakes or simply show off their skill. Xbox Live multiplayer is supported and is expected to be a large part of the game’s potential success. Up to 8 players can engage in head-to-head explosive dogfights or indulge in squadron-based cooperative play.

Over G Fighters is the second attempt at an aerial combat game for the Xbox 360 and shouldn’t disappoint. Crimson Skies was a notable aerial fighter for the original Xbox and was especially notorious for its Live play. Hopefully Ubisoft can rival Crimson Skies with this release and with a promising single-player campaign and Live multiplayer, the possibility is certainly there.
